How to Visualize - The Visual Submodalities of Perception utilizes visualization techniques drawing specifically upon NLP perception models designed to encompass a full spectrum of information processing and how this affects physiological and emotional states. We tend to think of our internal imagery (what we "see" in our minds' eyes) as being fixed, static content when in actuality the content and the context can be edited and adapted. What developers in the field of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) determined was that context is often more important than content, and there are general rules that can be applied. Internal experiences can be intensified or diminished simply by altering the dynamics of the experience and not changing the details of the experience. We tend to use "truisms" to code our reality. For example, generally speaking a small, unfocused, black and white image has less intensity than a larger-than-life, vibrantly-colored movie. In either example, the content was not addressed and it simply becomes a question of whether or not the content is empowering or disempowering, and how intensely you want to respond to the content.
Another example could be something that is a perceived absolute, such as the sun is going to rise tomorrow, and this is going to be coded into your mind in a specific way (after all, we could probably agree that the sun has a history of continuously rising, and if it didn't... well, learning to visualize probably isn't going to be a concern, right?). When comparing the visual submodalities (size, shape, color, dimensionality, location, clarity, etc.) of your internal representation (mental pictures/movies) of the sun rising tomorrow with teaching your blue, pet unicorn how to fly will give you two different sets of submodalities. One is your way of coding reality based upon what you've seen (a sunrise), and the other based upon coding something imaginary/hypothetical that you have to construct in your mind's eye (a flying blue unicorn). The distinctions are in the submodalities, not in the belief (a specific set of submodalities for true/untrue, real/false) that flying blue unicorns don't exist or the belief that the sun always rises. There is a way of coding that information into your mind so that the example falls into the category of "real" versus "unreal". This is also how to change your belief system....
